About The Collection

Representing three years of exploration into the indigo pigment as used in art materials - this collection of works spans the artist/maker’s current repertoire of mediums and materials. Materials used include block printing ink, cotton fabric & yarn, gouache, indigo dye, indigo ink, linen fabric, pastel, pen, pencil, watercolor, and wool yarn.

This exhibition has been designed to share with you the artist’s process in the approximate timeline the works were conceived and created.

It is the hope of the artist that viewers will see the possibility of exploration in their own lives through this exhibit - may it be in art materials/mediums or in something completely different. Some mediums represent ten years of practice and study while others represent just three years. Exploration and discovery is such a core part of our humanity and is always worth the ups and downs.

Creating The Collection

The origin of the collection began with experiments in indigo dyeing - including the dipping of watercolor paper which later became the Indigo Imaginarium series of gouache paintings and linen fabrics which later became quilted vests. From there the artist began to work on illustrating the various varieties of plants from which indigo pigment is derived.

This prompted the surface pattern designs seen on the textile goods in the collection. Interestingly, each element seen in those designs was originally created using indigo watercolor paint - then scanned, digitally colored, and arranged into patterns. These same illustrations carried over into the watercolor and ink series.

Finishing up the collection are the block print designs featuring Persicaria tinctoria - a more commonly used natural dyer’s plant here in the Northeast.
