One Day of Easy Camping Meals

For weekend camping trips within a few hours of our home base, I believe there's no reason to both overcomplicate and skimp on meals. All you need is a cooler with ice packs and you can bring just about anything, except ice cream I suppose. I'm also a big fan of doing as much prep work as possible at home to make meal preparation at camp much easier. This includes baking any goodies, washing all the produce, and preparing condiments and sauces.

Gluten Free in Downtown Chicago

I'm going to start by admitting that downtown Chicago was not the easiest spot to find gluten free, dairy free, AND mostly vegetarian eats. Further complicating the situation, I really don't like to eat out for Italian food - I always feel it's never better than anything I can make at home with higher quality ingredients. So with all these needs and preferences of mine, downtown Chicago was just not my cup of tea. However, I did manage to dig up a couple of good eats all within walking distance of my base at the Weston River North Hotel.

Traveling For Gluten Free Bakeries

When I first started traveling while gluten free, all things food related felt rather terrifying.

Would I be able to find safe foods to eat at the grocery store? Would I be able to eat anything other than steak and a salad? Would I have to go out to dinner with my coworkers and awkwardly not order? How would I prepare any of the "toast for best quality" gluten free breads in my hotel room?

My Favorite Fall Recipes

Over the past three plus years, I've shared quite a number of recipes and over time, they just get buried in the archives. So I'm taking the time to revive a few of my favorites which make a regular appearance in our kitchen, update the photos, and share them as part of seasonal collections.

When I think about recipes I'm excited to make in the Fall, there are two characteristics that come to mind; comfort and warming spices. I'll start with one from the first guest post I ever wrote - over on XGFX for Vegan MoFo (Month of Food). This little recipe was inspired by one of my favorite gluten free friendly restaurants in San Francisco, Betelnut. Crispy Cauliflower is simple to make and even better, it's very allergen friendly, making it a great appetizer to serve at a get together.

Gluten Free In Washington, District of Columbia: At the Chef's Counter

On this last trip to Washington D.C. I got stuck in the National Geographic lobby during an insane thunderstorm, never adjusted to East Coast time, and ate at the chef's counter of an absolutely fantastic restaurant. It was a pretty wild trip.

That last experience was up there with my top gluten free dining experiences ever. Let me start by recommending that you make reservations at Birch & Barley the second you find yourself in Washington D.C. - don't let the name fool you either, they are incredibly gluten free friendly. By some amazing source of luck, I wandered in without a reservation and got seated at the chef's counter on a Thursday evening. Serious win.

As I walked in I asked the hostess about my dietary needs, specifically gluten and dairy, and was assured they would take care of me. Sitting down, I noticed the menu has a kind notation about welcoming substitutions to accommodate your needs. This was definitely my kind of place.

A Seattle Farmers Market Recipe Series

Over the course of this summer, I've been making a few extra special trips to Seattle area farmers markets with my camera in tow to create a little series of recipes based on my market finds.

If you aren't familiar with the Seattle area, we're spoiled with over 15 markets operating throughout the city. Granted some are only seasonal, but it still seems So far I've whipped together three recipes with finds from the PhinneyUniversity District, and Ballard Farmers Markets. I'm currently writing up a recipe with some early fall finds at the Broadway Farmers Market and the Columbia City market is high on my list to try next.

Wondering where those recipes are at?

Well if you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you may already know, but over the summer I started as a contributor to a new to the scene food blog, My Cooking Spot. Each month, I'm sharing one Seattle area farmers market and a recipe made with my finds there. While I've still get plenty of posts to come, I thought I'd take a moment to share those recipes I've made thus far.

Gluten Free in Vancouver, British Columbia

Strange as it is, being just a few hours north of Seattle, I've barely spent any time in Vancouver, British Columbia. On our most recent trip, I made sure that at least our route remedied that situation and allowed for a drive and the most important kind of stop in this mostly new-to-me city. That most important stop of course was an all gluten free bakery that I've seen Brooke from Gluten Free Authority post about oh so many times.
